Frequently Asked Questions
The state of Tennessee allows patients to receive physical therapy care without a physician referral under certain circumstances. However, many insurance companies require a physician referral for a claim to be processed. So, when insurance is being billed, it’s typically recommended to have a physician referral.
Please call us at 865.251.3030 if you have any questions or concerns. If needed, she will gladly help you schedule an appointment with one of our orthopedic surgeons or another physician so you can obtain a referral.
Call 865.251.3030 and ask to schedule an evaluation with an OrthoKnox physical therapist. You will need your insurance information so we can verify your insurance benefits and obtain pre-certification, if required. We are open Monday through Friday.
Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your first appointment for registration. Bring your identification and insurance card with you. If we will be evaluating and treating your low back or any problem in either leg, please wear or bring shorts. If we will be treating your neck or shoulder, women may find it more comfortable to wear a sports bra or tank top.
A physical therapist will perform a thorough evaluation to determine the primary cause(s) for your limitations or pain. They will gather information about your complaint and limitations and perform special tests that assist in determining the problem, including an assessment of your strength, flexibility, mobility at the joint, and muscle irritability.
Following the assessment, the therapist will educate you on the primary evaluation findings, develop an individualized rehabilitation program designed specifically for you, and begin treatment.
This can vary from 1-2 visits and can exceed 1-2 months for more severe problems. Your physical therapist will make recommendations based on your individual situation and needs. Following your physical therapist’s recommendations and performing home exercises will facilitate a more rapid recovery and may decrease the number of physical therapy visits you need.
We also provide Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation services.

My physical therapist was knowledgeable and personable and made me feel at ease throughout the entire session. OrthoKnox is an excellent place. I had total knee replacement 3 weeks ago, and I am recovering beautifully. All my friends and family cannot believe how far I’ve come in just 3 weeks. The staff is very kind, caring and take the time to ensure that all my concerns, fears and questions are resolved. Dr. Hovis and his PA, Neil Stoner, are the best.

All the doctors and staff at OrthoKnox including those in the physical therapy department, are very caring, and competent. I have been very satisfied with both the surgery outcome as well as the recovery. One nice thing is there is very little wait time after you arrive at your appointed time.

Dr. Hovis has taken care of me the past 12 years. Started out with knee surgery and later in life with a shoulder that needed an injection. I would never go anywhere else because he is the best, and he cares. My last visit a couple of months ago was like seeing a family member again. You’re in good hands here.
