Understanding Total Knee
Replacement

What is Total Knee Replacement

Total knee replacement (TKR) is a surgical procedure that replaces damaged knee joints with artificial components. The procedure has a high success rate for relieving pain and restoring function. TKR is often recommended for individuals who have severe knee pain, stiffness, or limited mobility due to conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or traumatic injuries.

How Does Total Knee Replacement Work?

During the procedure, the damaged cartilage, bone, and ligaments are removed from the knee joint. Artificial components, typically made of metal and plastic, are then implanted in their place. These components are designed to mimic the function of a healthy knee joint.

Benefits of Total Knee Replacement

A few of the many benefits of total knee replacement include:

  • Pain Relief: Total knee replacement can significantly reduce or eliminate knee pain.
  • Improved Mobility: The procedure can restore your ability to move freely and participate in activities you enjoy.
  • Enhanced Quality of Life: By reducing pain and improving mobility, total knee replacement can greatly
enhance your overall quality of life.

Recovery Process

The recovery process after total knee replacement varies from person to person. However, many patients can expect a faster recovery time with MAKOplasty® due to the increased precision and reduced soft tissue trauma. With proper care and physical therapy, many individuals can return to their normal activities within a few months. Learn more about MAKOplasty® below.

MAKO Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery

The MAKOplasty® Procedure at OrthoKnox

At OrthoKnox, our team is committed to providing the latest in orthopedic innovation and technology that can make a real difference in the quality of life of our patients. MAKOplasty® is one such procedure that substantially improves aspects of partial and total knee replacements. Enabled by robotic arm technology, it allows the surgeon to perform surgery more precisely through a smaller incision, as compared to traditional replacement surgery. To learn more about this procedure at OrthoKnox, check out our MAKOplasty® video featuring Dr. David Hovis above.

More About the Procedure

This is a graphic of a knee joint depicting the stages of osteoarthritis.

MAKOplasty® knee resurfacing is an innovative treatment option for adults living with early to mid-stage osteoarthritis (OA) in the medial (inner), patellofemoral (top), or lateral (outer) compartments of the knee (see illustration above). MAKOplasty® allows our surgeons to perform a more precise surgery through an incision as small as 2.5 to 3 inches in some cases.

The precise placement of the implant, aided by 3-D imaging and the robotic arm, allows for preservation of your own healthy bone and tissue, resulting in a more natural-feeling knee. And because more healthy bone is preserved, patients who undergo MAKOplasty® partial knee procedures may still be candidates for a total knee replacement procedure later in life if necessary.

MAKOplasty® Benefits

MAKOplasty® is a robotic-assisted surgical technique that offers several advantages for total knee replacement:

  • Customized Planning: Before surgery, a 3D model of your knee is created, allowing your surgeon to plan the procedure with precision.
  • Real-time Guidance: During surgery, the robotic arm provides real-time feedback, ensuring accurate implant placement and alignment.
  • Reduced Soft Tissue Trauma: MAKOplasty® can often result in less soft tissue damage, potentially leading to a faster recovery.
